Founded in 1977, by the world famous, Pulitzer Prize-winning composer, Gian Carlo Menotti, Spoleto Festival U.S.A. became the new world counterpart to his Festival dei Due Mondi (Festival of Two Worlds) held annually in Spoleto, Italy; Spoleto is held annually in Charleston during late spring. The first museum in North America was founded in Charleston in 1773. Today, it and other museums offer residents a broad perspective of the cultural and sociological life that is in Charleston. The history of this 300 year old community intertwines with a rich and exciting cultural agenda, creating a way of life in which each day brings a new and exciting experience.
